Puccini: Là sui monti dell'Est "茉莉花" (The Mountains of the East)

It is generally believed that Puccini might take the melody of "Là sui monti dell'Est" (The Mountains of the East) from a Chinese folk song "茉莉花" (Mo-Li-Hua, Jasmine).

This video is edited from two performances of Puccini's Turandot:
Metropolitan Opera Chorus and Orchestra (1989)
San Francisco Opera Chorus and Orchestra (1994)

Giacomo Puccini wrote the opera "Turandot" in 1924. It is based on a story by Scheherezade, the well-known Persian Queen and the story teller of the "One Thousand and One Nights". The story is about a Persian prince and Chinese Princess. "the Mountains of the East" is in the Act #1. The same melody briefly reappears in Act #2 ("Gloria, gloria, o vincitore!") and Act #3 ("Principessa divina!").
