How to Dig a Trench by Hand

There are several power tools out there to help you dig a trench, but if you have to do it by hand, then here at Tools 4 Guys, recommend you use an edger or edge shovel (as shown in the video above) or a scraper or ice scraper, and a drain spade.

(Many viewers have asked that we provide the Amazon affiliate links to help them find the products that we review and as a way of supporting the channel. If you purchase a product or service with the links provided, there is no additional charge to you. We always recommend shopping around for the best price. Now you can buy the Drain Spade here at Lowe’s, and while this one did do the job, it only had 87 reviews with a 4.5 out of 5 rating, which isn't bad...but...

But after doing more research, we found a Drain Spade on Amazon made by True Temper, that is an Amazon Choice, has over 600 reviews, with a 4.3 out of 5 rating, has free shipping and returns and comes in less than the Kobalt at Lowe's:

Edger or Edge Shovel vs. Ice Scraper

The preferred tool for making edges is the edger or Edge Shovel. You can see in the video how easy it is to cut into the lawn and create that straight line. But if you already have an ice scraper, which is similar, but instead of a rounded blade, it has a flat blade, you can use that as well. It can still work as an edger, it just may take just a little more elbow grease to punch it threw the lawn, but it will work.

Buy the Craftsman Manual Lawn Edger here at Lowe’s:

If you don’t have access to Lowe’s, you can buy a similar one on Amazon:

Drain Spade vs Trenching Spade

The Drain Spade, also called a sharp shooter, has a rounded end, with a low or flat blade angle, that allows the blade to cut through the soil easily, while the Trenching Spade has a pointed end, and a high blade angle, which allows the user to not have to bend as low to scoop out the dirt.

You can use the drain spade to clean out the trench as well, but you have to get lower to the ground to scoop out the dirt, so if you have a really, really long trench to dig, then we recommend you buy both tools, if it’s a smaller project, then you can get buy with just the Drain Spade.

If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to leave them below.

Now let's go out there and get the job done!
