SAT Function Transformations in 10 Seconds | Let Desmos Evaluate

Skip the FOIL on SAT function transformation problems. Type the function in Desmos, define the transformation, then evaluate. Three answers in seconds, zero algebra.

The problem: f(x) = (x+4)(x+3)(x-2), and the graph y = f(x) - 5 passes through (-4, a), (-3, b), and (2, c). Find a, b, c. The textbook way is to expand the cubic, plug in each x value, then subtract 5. About a minute of arithmetic and three chances to lose a sign.

The shortcut: open Desmos. Type f(x) = (x+4)(x+3)(x-2) on line one. On line two, type g(x) = f(x) - 5. Now type g(-4), g(-3), and g(2) on separate lines. All three return -5. Answer C.

You never expand the polynomial. You never plug numbers by hand. Desmos defines the transformation once and evaluates it for you at each input. The Bluebook calculator has Desmos built in, so this works directly on test day.

This pattern works on every SAT function transformation problem that asks for output values at specific x-coordinates. Vertical shifts, horizontal shifts, reflections, stretches. Define the new function in one line, then evaluate at each x.
