Браун Бесс (англ. Brown Bess — «Бурая Бесс», «Смуглая Бесс») — прозвище, под которым получило известность британское ружьё образца 1722 года и его более поздние модели. Официальное название оружия — «Мушкет сухопутного образца» (Land Pattern Musket). В англоязычной терминологии словом «мушкет» обозначается и то, что в русском языке принято называть ружьём или фузеей.
«Браун Бесс» оставалась штатным оружием британского пехотинца в течение более чем столетия: впервые выпущенное в 1722 году, это ружьё было окончательно заменено на новые образцы лишь накануне и в ходе Крымской войны.
Кроме Великобритании, «Браун Бесс» широко применялась в британских колониях. Так, во время Войны за независимость США это ружьё широко применяли обе стороны, и именно на основе «Браун Бесс» были созданы первые образцы американских ружей. Некоторое количество «Браун Бесс» применялось в Америке ещё во время Гражданской войны.
В истории Новой Зеландии ружья «Браун Бесс» оставили неизгладимый след, став, по сути, причиной кровавых Мушкетных войн первой половины XIX века.

The Brown Bess musket is as much a symbol of the 18th Century British military as the iconic scarlet coat. THE BRITISH Brown Bess flintlock musket is quite simply one of the most important firearms ever made. It represented a huge technological advance when it was designed nearly 300 years ago and has influenced almost every military long gun that came after it. The history of this weapon is long and illustrious, and full of surprising stories.
The “Long Land Pattern Musket,” the official name for the Brown Bess, became the standard gun of the British Empire’s land forces way back in 1722. Over the next 116 years, the original design would be continually altered, modified and improved. The Brown Bess was only superseded in 1838, when it was officially replaced by a percussion cap smoothbore musket. There were still plenty around, however, with the gun being particularly popular among civilians long after it was officially retired. There are reports of the Brown Bess seeing service as late as the mid-19th century.
There are a number of theories about how the famous gun came by its nickname of “Brown Bess.” By 1785, it was common to see the weapon referred to by this popular moniker, but nobody is quite sure why. It was certainly standard practice in those days for weapon manufacturers to coat the whole of their firearms, including the barrel and other metal parts, with varnish. Some have said that the resulting brown colour led to the nickname. The problem is that in 1785, a lot of muskets underwent the same treatment, so the “Brown” of the “Brown Bess” was hardly unusual and likely not unique enough to warrant a nickname. Others have said that the gun might have been named after a pike of the period that was known as a “Brown Bill.” Or, of course, it could have been a tribute to some unknown tavern maid, or just a creative term of endearment that the soldier often gives to his weapon, even today. Yet another theory holds that the weapon references queen Elizabeth I aka “Bess,” one of the most beloved monarchs in British history.
