FalconCam Project - ledge camera LIVE

THE LEDGE CAM HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY DISABLED, thanks in most part to the number of bots and intentionally recalcitrant chatters, and to give our hard-working mods a proper break. The rules may change in this regard soon. We'll be back chatting in a few days time but have a good holiday break. Scott B.

(For Chat Rules see below description)

The FalconCam Project is a research-based and educational initiative with the aim of studying the breeding behaviour and diet of a family of resident, non-migratory peregrine falcons in Australia.
The nest, or eyrie, is in a wooden box installed at the top of a tall water tower (still in use) in the grounds of Charles Sturt University, on the edge of the city of Orange in the Central West region of New South Wales. The project has been approved by CSU’s Animal Ethics’ Committee. To date (2020) we have collected nearly six years’ worth of breeding behaviour data and seven years’ of prey analysis.

This live stream is our close-up ledge camera view looking outside from the eyrie.

NEW WEBSITE (June 2022) - https://science-health.csu.edu.au/falconcam/

The Project is now run by:
Dr. Cilla Kinross (Adjunct Lecturer, Environmental Management) - ckinross@csu.edu.au
(formerly with Scott Banks).

Support is received from CSU Green, the 30 Squadron Beaufighters group (the peregrine is their mascot) and public donations (via the CSU Green website, and campus). The birds have been observed using the tower since 2007, breeding in the box for past twelve years, with a maximum of three eggs and successful fledgings per season (averaging 1.5).

The birds do not migrate and courtship rituals and some scrape (nest) building continues throughout the year, but intensifies, along with food bringing by the male, in July and August. Eggs are laid usually in late August, with chicks hatching in October and fledging in November. The youngsters often stay around as late as March being taught to hunt by their parents, and often visiting the nest in the tower, so there is much to watch even out of the main breeding season.

CHAT RULES
This chat has the goal of fostering understanding of the behaviour and prey of peregrine falcons (Peregrinus macropus) using the nest box at Charles Sturt University, Orange. To keep the chat open, pleasant and useful, we have a few rules. Those flouting the rules will be warned and could be blocked by moderators (mods, with the blue spanners) from commenting:
1. Keep your comments on topic and related to this Project nesting site, particularly during the breeding season (August to December). We may permit comments about other Australian sites if relevant.
2. Use English in this chat. If you do not speak English, there are on-line translators available.
3. Do not criticise people’s attempt to write in English.
4. Do not ask for donations (except for this site), discuss politics, advertise other sites or products (including videos), use obscene language or hate speech,
5. Avoid using panic language if you see something unusual and remember this is a wildlife project with very limited interference by the project team.
6. Be nice to each other. Do not get into heated arguments with other chatters.
7. Remember mods are humans, too. Please respect their decisions.
8. Have fun watching this peregrine family and enjoy their antics and lives!!
