Hundreds gathered in Charlotte on Thursday to unveil a historical marker honoring the Good Samaritan

Hundreds gathered in Charlotte on Thursday to unveil a historical marker honoring the Good Samaritan Hospital, the first North Carolina public hospital to treat African Americans during segregation. The marker, unveiled at Ebenezer Baptist Church, commemorates a facility that opened in 1891, initially housing about 20 patients and later expanding to roughly 100, and which also operated a school that trained Black nurses. Dr. Alvin Powell petitioned for the marker to preserve the hospital’s legacy. The North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program approved it after demonstrating statewide significanceand the hospital was the first privately funded segregated hospital in NC and treated patients from across county lines. A committee of ten professors unanimously backed the marker. While the Good Samaritan Hospital closed in 1982, attendees emphasized its enduring impact on the community, with 81-year-old Nancy Huntley recalling she was born there.
