Altered Roses is an extension of Prelude and Roses Scream which begins the journey of Blooms and Death, unfolding through clarinet, piano and layered shadow imagery. Original rose forms dissolve into fragmented digital textures, where the vivid rose appears only momentarily within shifting layers of shadow and light. The work inhabits a world of stillness and fragility, where sound and image move together as a meditation on beauty, distance and impermanence.
The clarinet and piano writing is intimate, subtle and lyrical, allowing single tones, resonances and silences to bloom naturally within the acoustic space. The piano extends and colours the clarinet sonorities through fragile harmonies, muted resonance and suspended gestures, creating a restrained yet richly textured atmosphere. Breath, interruption and decay shape the musical language, while the visual world driven by the colour and movement of the rose mirrors the work’s quiet intensity: a flower suspended between memory, shadow and transformation.
The piece draws on durational approaches to rhythm, where pulse is treated as an abstract framework rather than a fixed metre. Irregular subdivisions, ties and freely accented gestures dissolve any stable sense of beat, allowing time to stretch and contract organically. Through this non-metrical landscape, Altered Roses seeks moments of suspension and transformation, where delicate sonorities and guttural textures coexist within a fragile sonic environment
