The Wassily Chair: 1926 Bauhaus Design | Story Behind the Piece | Desert Varnish Design

Chairs aren't just for sitting.
This is the Wassily Chair, designed by Marcel Breuer in 1926 and named after Bauhaus artist Wassily Kandinsky. The tubular steel frame was inspired by bicycle handlebars, one of the first pieces of furniture to use that material in that way. The black leather with the original brown edge detail is something most modern reproductions don't bother to get right.

This pair came from an Arizona architect's vintage estate, with a purchase receipt from the 1980s still attached and condition that stopped us cold. They're now part of a room at 15 Harvest Lane in Sedona, Arizona, alongside a Noguchi coffee table and a pair of vintage Barcelona chairs.

This is part of our Story Behind the Piece series, where we dig into the history of the vintage and mid-century modern furniture we source and place.

Desert Varnish Design is an interior design and home staging studio based in Sedona, Arizona, working throughout Sedona, the Verde Valley, Cottonwood, Flagstaff, Scottsdale, Phoenix and beyond.
