Centenary of the Battle of Haifa Ceremony in Memory of Fallen Indian Soldiers

When the British Commonwealth forces conquered then Palestine from the Ottoman Empire in World War I, it was primarily Indian soldiers who captured the city of Haifa. This ceremony was held in the presence of the Indian ambassador to Israel on Sept. 6, 2018 at the Haifa Indian Cemetery to commemorate the centenary of this event and to pay tribute to the brave Indian soldiers of the Jodhpur Imperial Lancers and the Mysore Lancers who laid down their lives. The commander of the Jodhpur Lancers, Major Dalpat Sing Shekhawat, was killed while leading the cavalry charge, and is known in India as "The Hero of Haifa". More than 900 Indian soldiers are buried in military cemeteries in Israel.
