ORCHID CARE: Repotting Paphiopedilum Orchids

Tonight I'll be repotting a few paphiopedilums - two mottled leaf (Both half Maudiae types), and one green leafed NOID. Due to time restrictions I've only recorded 2 of the repottings ... but you get the idea!

I use a small mix of bark/perlite/charcoal, mixed with extra LECA and sphagnum. I line all my pots with LECT beads. In the past I also used to mix in a general orchid mix which had some peat and was a lot more dense - the mottled paphs didn't mind, but the green-leaf ones were a different story.

Most are still OK, and I've re-repotted into an airier mix, but my Paph spiceraneaum and Memoria Joan Levy are now rootless. They HATED it... and I'm not sure if it was because the mix was too dense or acidic... I can only guess.

Paphiopedilums are known to be semi-terrestrial orchids - but
from my experience, I want to suggest this: Mottled leaf paphs (Barbatum, Parvisepalum, Brachypetalum types) have all been totally fine with most mixes (the same as I would use for cymbidiums or zygopetalums) - they don't like huge air gaps, but are otherwise pretty tolerant to most finer media. I think the green leafed paphs need much less dense media, and I do think they are more fussy than the mottled types.
