According to a recent article, multiple players throughout the league have noticed the pitch clock operation tends to be inconsistent or incorrect from city to city. We initially anticipated an influx of new reasons for ejections with the automated ball/strike zone through which players, coaches, and managers would be ejected for arguing with the RoboUmp machines or operators, but the only mechanism for argument by on-field personnel is via the on-field umpires; hence, the penalty of ejection.

Shelton's ejection thus exemplifies this idea of an ejection for arguing with someone in the press box operating a scoreboard shot clock timer, but having to go through the on-field umpires to make that argument, as Shelton did here.

There was also a balk no-call during Hedges' at-bat the prior game that contributed to animosity.
