Macon-Bibb jail count shrinks as inmate-audit marks halfway point

Wednesday marked the official halfway point for Macon-Bibb County's 30-day inmate audit, as Bibb County leaders work from the inside out to transform the county's criminal justice system.

On June 10, Mayor Lester Miller revealed a sweeping plan to expand the Bibb County jail and give non-violent offenders a second chance to work beyond the bars.

During his press conference, Miller said the initiatives are being implemented with a focus on "leveling the playing field" among non-violent inmates and eliminating a two-tiered system between those who can and cannot make bond.

"It's a smart thing to do. It's a fiscally responsible thing to do, and something that we have to do," Miller said. "I want the folks to have an opportunity to work, to be able to work, and I want everyone to have an equal opportunity to have gainful employment."
