SHAMAN’S WIRES is a search towards the union of two sonic worlds: that of acoustics, represented by the sounds of the voice, percussion, prepared cello, and the electronic sound, taken as a hybrid dimension and unforeseeable. In our quest for an archaic and primordial timbre, we started to experiment with new performance practices linked to the great ethnic tradition of Kazakhstan. More precisely, we analyzed the techniques of the Shamanic instrument Kyl Kobiz and the sound qualities of the harmonic chant.

The project is grounded on the ancient Shamanic vision of the nomadic cultures of Central Asia, strongly linked to the veneration of ancestors, animism and the power of nature. The musical itinerary is driven by the idea of the exploration of the spiritual states that characterize the Shaman transitions between the different dimensions and the existential levels, highlighted by the electronic transformations. In order to individuate these ways in a more intuitive fashion, we chose a musical form primarily based on improvisation and graphic scores.

The sound exploration takes place first of all on the hyper-cello and on the playing technique employed: rhythmical structures derived from the ethnic tradition, hybridity of guttural tones in the style of harmonic chant, extreme and microtonal mistuning that alters the cello's resonant balance, the coating of the strings with small steel and copper objects intensifying beat tones and timbric modulations.

The electronic elaborations occur to shed light on some aspects of the sonic spectrum, on their natural resonances and on the higher frequencies of the instrument. Synthesis sounds, sounds for physical models, sampling, extreme treatment of the original sound are "played" by the hyper-cello through real-time analysis of the sound and the gestuality.
The SHAMAN'S WIRES project has been conceived as a live performance of voice, hypercello, percussions and live electronics of a total lenght of 45/50 minutes.
