Modern attack helicopters are not only designed for ground strikes—they can also engage aerial targets, including other helicopters. A fascinating example is the potential encounter between the Chinese CAIC Z-10 and the American Boeing AH-64 Apache, two of the most advanced attack helicopters in the world.

One of the key weapons that gives the Z-10 an advantage in helicopter-to-helicopter combat is the TY-90 air-to-air missile. This missile was specifically designed for aerial combat between helicopters. It has an effective range of roughly 0.5 to 6 kilometers and can reach speeds of more than Mach 2, allowing it to quickly intercept maneuvering targets.

The TY-90 uses an infrared homing seeker, giving it strong resistance to electronic interference and enabling all-aspect attacks. Its warhead weighs around 3–3.5 kg and uses a continuous-rod fragmentation design, which can detonate near the target and damage critical areas such as the engine, rotor system, or cockpit. Because helicopters are relatively vulnerable to such damage, even a single successful hit can disable or destroy the target.

This combination of advanced missiles and modern avionics allows the Z-10 to perform dedicated helicopter air-combat missions, something only a few attack helicopters are optimized for. However, the real outcome of a battle would depend on several key factors: who detects the enemy first, who launches first, pilot skill, terrain, and electronic warfare conditions.

Both helicopters are highly capable combat platforms, and in modern warfare, technology, tactics, and battlefield awareness often matter more than raw specifications.
