The Clear Gesso Debate - Prepping a Paint by Number PBN - Is It Necessary? You Decide for Yourself!

I’m not sure why paint by number enthusiasts want to argue about whether to use clear gesso to prep their canvases before they paint. This seems to be a huge debate amongst the PBN community, and it seems to stir up quite a bit of negativity in some cases. I decided to make this short video as a visual demonstration to show how clear gesso can help with paint coverage in cases of transparent or translucent paints.

There are two reasons we use CLEAR GESSO to prep our canvases…1) to apply a layer on the surface in order to fill in the little divots of the canvas, so that we’re not using as much paint and we don’t have to apply 2-3 layers of paint, and 2) to get better coverage with our paints. Both of these reasons are to reduce the amount of paint we are using overall and to save time & frustration.

It literally takes me five minutes to apply clear gesso to a 16 x 20“ canvas using my “Clear Gesso Application Tool”, so I’m not sure why other people will say it’s too time consuming.

In addition, I do not sand after I apply it, because what is the point of putting it on for the “tooth”, if you’re just going to sand off that texture? It will not ruin your brushes if you will use either cosmetic wipes to condition them as you work, or if you use my 3-in-1 Brush Cleaning System”.
