RESETTLEMENT: A YEAR LATER

To date, a year has passed since the resettlement of Berezovka and Bestau communities. The decision on resettlement was taken by the RoK Government due to expansion of the sanitary protection zone (SPZ) of the Karachaganak Oil & Gas Condensate Field. All costs for resettlement were borne by KPO B.V. A goal was set from the outset to implement the resettlement in accordance with the RoK Legislation and international standards on resettlement. At the end of 2017 the process of resettlement was completed – all households were resettled to new apartments in Aksai and detached houses in the nearby microregion of Araltal.
KPO continues a regular monitoring of the social adaptation process of the residents in the new location. The company developed a Grievance Procedure for the residents. Following this Procedure, the residents of Araltal and the two 9-storey blocks of apartments in Aksai can directly call the KPO Community Liaison Specialist to lodge their grievances.
The new residents resettled from Berezovka and Bestau communities are now settling in successfully in their new homes. The people have already noted the improvements of their life standards due to proximity to social facilities, like clinics, schools, shopping and cultural centres. Due to compact location of the residence in the same place, the residents managed to keep the close social networks with their neighbours and friends and can meet more often with their relatives who live in Aksai.
