Can A Trail Of Burning Gas Blow Up Your Fuel Tank? | MythBusters

Hollywood has been using the same two fire tricks for a hundred years — the burning trail of gasoline that races back to the car and blows the whole thing up, and the hero who outruns a lit gunpowder fuse, stamps it out at the last second, and saves the day — and Adam and Jamie decided to find out how many of those scenes were even physically possible, laying out a 100-foot gasoline trail to see if the flame would actually travel back and ignite the tank, and then building a full-length gunpowder fuse rig to test whether a running human could outpace the burn rate and stomp it dead before the powder keg went, and the results are the kind of thing that ruins action movies forever and makes them simultaneously more interesting — one myth is more dangerous than films suggest, one is far more survivable, and Jamie's expression throughout the fuse test is worth the entire episode on its own.
