Names on Monuments— Bryan Stevenson, Equal Justice Initiative

On a six-acre park in Montgomery, Alabama, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice stands just hundreds of feet from the site of a former slave market. Bearing witness to the violent, unjust history of slavery and its aftermath, the memorial and adjacent Legacy Museum were developed by Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), a legal aid non-profit based in Montgomery. In June 2019, the Mellon Foundation Board visited the memorial, where EJI founder and executive director Bryan Stevenson shared his reflections on the history of racial terror, the legacy of migration, recovering the narrative of slavery, and more.
