Sustainable Lifestyle Changes for Low Waste Living | TikTok Compilation
Sustainable Lifestyle Changes for Low Waste Living | TikTok Compilation
I think there’s a lot of misconception about sustainability and making sustainable lifestyle changes. I think a lot of people believe that to be a sustainable person, you have to be “perfect” at sustainability and perfect at your journey towards a zero-waste or low-waste lifestyle meaning absolutely zero use of plastic or completely transforming yourself into a vegan, etc. Although these are ways to be more sustainable, complete transformations are not realistic for many of us. I think it’s really easy for us to judge others’ on their journeys; however, we have to remember that a lot of us are on different chapters of our sustainability journey, and we each have our own limitations. Judging others for being “imperfect” or not being sustainable in certain ways is a sure way to impede other people’s progress or even dissuade others from beginning their sustainable journeys in the first place. I think it’s essential to not overlook the little efforts that we take towards sustainability and to remember that we don’t have to be perfect as long as we continue to be aware of our actions and mindful of our environmental impact. I also want to address the specific “aesthetic” that is unfortunately misrepresenting the zero/low-waste movement. In addition to being perfect, a lot of people think you have to LOOK perfect, resulting in unnecessary consumption of “new, perfect” products to fit this superfluous “aesthetic.” Yes, I feature new, sustainable products in many of my compilation videos with the intention to inform and educate others about alternatives to unsustainable goods and practices. However, this does not mean you need to buy everything new! Buy what you need, when you need it, and re-use and repurpose as much as you can. It’s critical for us to understand our consumptive habits and how our habits have consequences as well as how they affect our environment.
We will all make mistakes and we won’t be 100% perfect, and that’s ok, as long as we continue to try our best.
