Honest Thief tells the story of Tom Dolan (Liam Neeson), a man who has been acting as a con artist for years. Tom is so good at deceiving and stealing large sums of money, he has earned the nickname In Out Bandit or a slippery bandit who is hard to catch. But Tom chooses to retire from his illicit job after he meets and falls in love with Annie Wilkins (Kate Walsh). Tom also intends to turn over a new leaf by turning himself in to the FBI in order to rid himself of his criminal past. An FBI agent named Sam Baker (Robert Patrick) who accepts his criminal confession feels doubtful because Tom has previously made a false confession. Baker then sends two of his colleagues, John Nivens (Jai Courtney) and Ramon Hall (Anthony Ramos) to take care of Tom's surrender case. Tom then shows them the location of the storage unit, where the stolen money is hidden. Seeing the large piles of money, Nivens and Hall had dark eyes and actually intended to steal it. Nivens and Hall threaten Tom at gunpoint and ask him to hand over the storage unit. In the midst of blackmailing Tom, Baker suddenly came to catch the evil actions of two of his colleagues. Panicked, Nivens shoots Baker to death.
Tom was finally framed as the perpetrator of Baker's murder by these two FBI agents. Tom is forced to flee with Annie while thinking of a way to clear his name of the Baker murder charge. How will Tom's story continue? Can he escape the trap of two FBI agents? this is the story of Honest Thief.
