Oriya Literature

Radha-nath Ray (1848-1908)

Radha-nath Ray (1848-1908) ushered in a new age in Oriya poetry. His magnum opus, the Mahayatra, broke entirely new grounds. It was the first attempt to introduce blank verse in Oriya poem in imitation of the Bengali poet Madhu sudan Datta, and, contrasted with the early medieval Oriya poetry, shows “an advance or enlargement of ideas and thoughts, accompanied by new powers and forms of expression”.
In his Mahayatra, based on the story of the last journey of the Pandaavas, he made them come to Orissa, and this device enabled him to sing the beauty of the hills, rivers, the Chilka lake, and other landscapes of Orissa.
Besides the Mahayatra, Radha- nath wrote a number of small romances in verse, many of them being in imitation of English poets. He was also the pioneer in modern Oriya Katha-Sahitya in prose. His Italiya Yuva (Young Italian) was published in 1877.

Madhu-sudan Rao (1853-1912)

Madhu-sudan Rao (1853-1912) wrote in a very forceful prose style a number of stories and essays, and his poetic genius was on the side of the lyric. His Vasanta-gatha and Kusumanjali embody some of the highest flights of his imagination in the realms of Truth, and World, and Time. His sense of patriotism is portrayed in his Utkala-gatha, a volume of lyrics.

Lakshman Moreshwar Halbe

Baba Padmanji (1831-1906) gave the first original novel in Marathi (1857) — Yamund Paryatan— the sojourns of Yamuna, a Hindu widow, describing in it all the miseries that she had to go through, incidentally eulogizing Christianity at the cost of Hindu religion. Lakshman Moreshwar Halbe wrote two original social novels, — Muktamala and Ratnaprabha (1866)
