Russia: Zakharova slams new restrictions on Russian observation flights over US

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Russia "will conduct an assessment, make a decision on our own reasonable steps," in response to intentions expressed by US authorities to put restrictions on Russian observation flights over the US soil carried out under the Open Skies Treaty, speaking in a press briefing in Moscow on Thursday.

SOT Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): "If we talk about the measures taken by the USA which, as mass media report, are aimed at complicating Russia's observation flights over the USA, well, we will also assess their matching with the agreement. We will conduct an assessment, make a decision on our own reasonable steps."

SOT Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): "More than once, we have already commented on the US attitude, in particular, the US defence officials' [attitude] at the last stage, not only politicians, not only official representatives, but, specifically, defence officials towards the Russian mass media, Russian journalists, particularly, representatives of RT TV channel, Sputnik and so on. In the United States, it is required that the company that serves RT America register as a foreign agent. On the one hand, this could be called a policy of double standards, if the situation was not much more serious and much more multi-layered and deep. All the requirements for RT and Sputnik are contrary to the American principles of freedom of speech. Selective and obviously politically biased application of legislation to the Russian media will mean limiting freedom of speech, which is guaranteed by the US Constitution."
