Heat Transfer in Hydronic Systems
A solid understanding of heat transfer is essential for all hydronic system professionals. It guides both design and troubleshooting. John Siegenthaler, P.E., a favorite guest speaker to the webinar series, will discuss specific examples of heat transfer within the context of hydronic heating and cooling. He'll provide guidance on the fundamental relationship between heat transfer rate, flow rate and temperature change. John will discuss how to modify existing systems for low temperature operation, heat exchanger performance and how to avoid common heat transfer “bottlenecks.”
You'll learn:
→ What is the advantage of operating a hydronic heating system with a high ∆T between supply and return?
→ Does doubling the flow rate through a hydronic system double its heat output?
→ Does the ∆T of a hydronic distribution system “want to” remain constant?
→ What happens to heat output when outdoor reset control of water temperature is combined with constrained ∆T?
→ How does flow direction through a heat exchanger affect its performance?
→ What are design techniques for keeping heat exchangers free of scale and debris?
→ What happens to heat transfer rates when flows are laminar versus turbulent?
A seasoned industry leader and passionate teacher, John shares his over 35 years’ experience in the understanding and proper application of water-based engineering principles with our audience. He is the principal of Appropriate Designs and a regular contributor to industry publications Plumbing and Mechanical, PM Engineer and HPAC magazines.
