Episode 24 - EPIC Land Based Fishing & Catching Mud Crabs by Hand!

Welcome back Legends,

In this episode we continue to head North with our first stop at a tops little roadside stop that offers river frontage and some cracking fishing. Mind you, they weren’t big. but definitely kept me entertained for a few hours. The fish that I was catching were Spangled Perch, which I am told only grow to around 25cm, but they are a veracious species for their size as you will see.
AND - RED DIRT! How bloody good is it! Yes it gets everywhere, and we have only just started but the colours are incredible and the Atlantic looks pretty good up against the red - if you ask me 😉

Dex wasn’t feeling 100% and like always, loves a good spew. This is not uncommon for him, he has done this since he was a pup and we have had him checked out multiple times. We’d love to know if your dog is the same as our Spewy McGee! Once he was a little more active and himself we set off to our next camp which is called 40mile/Gnoorea Point. This place is absolutely huge and has around 92 camp sites that are all well spaced apart, Most of which have water frontage too!

Just a little back track, but when we were in Exmouth our trolley jack gave way and wouldn’t budge so we needed a new one. Would you believe that no where had one in Exmouth as they had all sold out. Now we could have waited and ordered one in BUT we needed to unhook the van, so I invested in a Trailer Mate jack. At first I was very dubious given the price however it has really been amazing and works a treat. Do your self a favour and look them up. They are very strong and will last for a very long time as they are basically just a bottle jack transformed to suit vans boats etc.

Anyway, back to 40mile. I couldn’t wait to explore the area, I had missed mangroves and the life that they bring, so straight away I was in looking for animals and I wasn’t disappointed. There were small mud crabs and octopus were everywhere, and it’s still taking me some time to get used to the tides up here. They were 4m and the further North we go, the bigger they will get.
The next morning I headed back into the mangroves to find a 2ft shark in a pool that had become stranded on the outgoing tide. It was pretty cool to watch. The fishing was pretty good I mean, they were only small but from the land I caught an eray of different species and managed to land my first Queen Fish which on light gear was awesome to catch.
Definitely be aware of the potential for Stone Fish while walking in and around the pools and mangroves, as it is the perfect habitat for one of these guys to live in.
After a couple of days at 40mile and a lot of rain, we leave camp and head to Karratha. Here we are staying at the AAOK Karratha Caravan Park. This allowed us to clean the van and the car which were filthy from the wet red mud and dust of the Pilbara.
I cannot talk this caravan park up enough, on arrival we were shown to our site from Ken and given the pressure cleaner to clean our car and caravan. The sites are well sized and all staff are friendly and accommodating if needed. The washing machines are free to use which is unheard of in my opinion, and they are spending a lot of money and time fixing the park up after receiving damage some years ago in a cyclone.
After unhooking we went for a bit of an explore for obvious reasons I wanted to find somewhere I could fish. Well as you will see, we find somewhere and while fishing Jess spots an absolute cracker of a mud crab in the mangroves. He was protecting a female.
Absolutely stoked to say the least! Catching muddies by hand has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time!

Well guys we hope you enjoyed this weeks episode.
Stay tuned for next week as I get stuck into some of the best land based fishing I have ever done!
