Rolex Daytona Watchmaking Demonstration:
Watchfinder & Co. presents: Inside the Rolex Daytona, a demonstration of the intricacies of the Rolex calibre 4130. Watchfinder Head Watchmaker Tony Williams shows you how this famous movement is taken apart and reassembled.
A History of the Rolex Daytona:
The Daytona Beach International Speedway in Florida was the birthplace of American stock car racing, which became NASCAR. As races and drivers become more competitive, the sponsors began to roll in, and for racing legend Junior Johnson, that sponsor was Rolex. Soon, the racing bug was in Rolex's blood, and they became an official sponsor of the circuit. That was in 1963, the same year as their watch — also called 'Daytona' — was born.
The Rolex Daytona already existed under another name: 'Cosmograph'. The watch was good, but lacked focus, and the inspiration from the speed of the drivers around the Daytona track was too perfect to ignore. After its re-christening, Rolex's chronograph went on to become one of the most famous, most sought-after watches of all time, commanding waiting lists that spanned into the years.
But the success of the Daytona was not immediate; it's popularity grew over time, and now early examples of the Daytona — and particularly the exotic-dialled 'Paul Newman' — command incredible prices. Rolex's Daytona has been with us for over fifty years now, and its heritage and popularity means it's here to stay
