Special Assignment: Battlefield of dreams, 21 January 2020

In the middle of Lavender Hill, on the Cape Flats, stands a derelict field. Separating two of the ghetto’s deadliest gangs, it has been the site of drug deals and turf wars, earning it the nickname of the battlefield or the killing field, because over the years, thousands of innocents – many of them children - traversing it have been gunned down in the cross-fire. In 2019 alone, there have been over 900-gang related murders. The children of these gang-lands are used to living with death, virtually on a daily basis. They are not traumatised but ‘traumatised’, because fear has become normalised and death a way of life in communities where almost every family has lost a loved one to gangs and drugs.
