🌕 Story: Why Lord Shiva Wears the Moon on His Head

Long ago, Chandra (the Moon god) married all 27 daughters of Daksha, who represent the 27 Nakshatras (stars in Hindu astrology).

But Chandra deeply loved only Rohini, his favorite wife. He spent all his time with her and neglected the others.

💢 The other wives felt hurt and complained to their father, Daksha, the powerful Prajapati.

Daksha was furious. He warned Chandra to treat all his wives equally, but Chandra didn’t listen.

Enraged, Daksha cursed Chandra:

“Your light and brilliance will fade away day by day… until you disappear completely!”
🌑 As the curse began to take effect, Chandra started losing his glow. Day by day, he became weaker… dimmer… nearly vanished into darkness.

Afraid and desperate, Chandra went to Lord Brahma, who told him:

“Only one god can help you now… Lord Shiva.”
🙏 Chandra began deep penance and devotion to Lord Shiva.

Moved by his prayers, Shiva appeared and said:

“I will not take away Daksha’s curse, but I will balance it.”
Shiva then placed Chandra on his matted hair, giving him refuge and restoring his glow in a cycle – allowing him to wax and wane, creating the phases of the moon.

🌟 That’s why Lord Shiva is called “Chandrashekara”, meaning

“The One Who Wears the Moon on His Head.”
