The Best Bananas For Florida

As anyone who has read http://www.thesurvivalgardener.com knows, I'm a big fan of growing tropical fruit outside their natural range. I'm particularly fond of growing bananas, having tried varieties such as Thai Black, 1,000 Fingers, Orinoco, Texas Star, Raja Puri, Dwarf Red and others. My friend Joe Pierce at the Mosswood Farm Store in Micanopy, Florida has taken banana growing to a further level and is testing a wide range of banana trees to see which ones do the best through the freezes and will produce bananas outside the tropics. Today he takes us on a tour of his banana plot and shares a wide range of varieties from cold-hardy bananas that are ornamental, to Rhino Horn plantains to excellent fruiting bananas that have consistently produced for him. When folks think of growing bananas in Florida, they often don't think of growing bananas in North Florida - but that's what you'll see in today's highly informative video.
