Isn't this picture very strange and frightening to see. This is a true picture of a baby girl. She was born in 2016 in a hospital in Nagpur. The baby was born with a genetic disorder called Harlequin Ichthyosis. It is a disorder in which a child is born without an external skin. Rather the skin is like a hard shell usually white or yellow in colour. The entire body of the baby is covered with that hard skin which is like fish scales and has cracks. This baby's parents were farmers and this was their first child. When the baby was operated and brought into this world, it was only 1.8 kg. The baby was immediately moved to the NICU. Why? Because it was suffering from respiratory problems due of complications in chest expansion owing to the dead skin. Sadly, 48 hours after birth the baby died. She was the first ever baby in India to be born with the scaly skin. After that another baby was born with the same disorder. What happened and who was that baby? Take a look.

In 2017, another baby was born in Bihar. When the mother delivered the baby she was shocked. The baby was deformed and its skin was a hardened shell. After the news of the baby was leaked, people rushed to the hospital to have a look at her. The doctors had to force the crowd away. That was an awkward and challenging situation. The baby's parents rejected the child considering her to be cursed. They believed it was some sort of divine punishment. The mother was so devasted that she refused to even breastfeed her. They didn't want to take care of the child. The parents said that they wanted to have a healthy child, whether girl or boy, they would be happy but on seeing their baby like this, they couldn't take it. The baby was dubbed an 'alien'. That was a demeaning remark. There are more such cases that have occurred in different places. Where? Take a look.

This baby was born in Delhi In 2018. The baby's mother was a 20 year old woman from Uttar Pradesh. The doctors suspect that the disorder might have been because the woman had married her cousin brother. This could have been the reason for the genetic defect. This disease is rare and only a handful of cases have been recorded across the world. This disease affects one in three million births. Just one in three million. There have been maybe 200 to 250 such cases across the world so far. Recently on 22nd April 2021, another baby was born with the same disorder in Odisha. It's sad to see children who are born with such disorder are being named as "ghost baby" or "alien baby" and are sometimes even abandoned by their parents although they are short-lived. After all, it's not a problem with the child, it's the genetic mutation which is inherited from the parents and can occur without any known reason. It can be an abnormality that is inherited from the genes of the parents.
