NOTE: This is a simulcast video presentation by BadEditPro and Clydesight YouTube Channels.

Overview:

The Realistic CTR-68 cassette tape recorder was introduced in late 1985 to Radio Shack customers. It is a small portable cassette tape recorder that runs on any of three power sources, AC line in, 6-volt DC adapter and 4 "C" cell batteries.

This "desktop" cassette tape recorder was loaded with quality sound that resulted from special features, including ARL (Automatic Level Control), Hi-Lo mic sensitivity and an LED metering system for monitoring record and playback signal strength. It uses AC Bias for recording.

It is a vintage cassette tape recorder because of its age (over 20 years) and has long since been unavailable from Radio Shack.

This video series is an educational, how-to video showing the procedures in the restoration of this vintage cassette recorder sold by Radio Shack under the Realistic name.

Background:

BadEditPro found a Realistic CTR-68 on E-Bay and purchased it. He was disappointed that it arrived basically DOA. It could not rewind, fast forward nor could it properly erase (and therefore not properly record) tapes.

ClydeSight is a BadEditPro channel subscriber and the two have made friends via YouTube, sharing common interests and advice about vintage tape recorders, both cassette and reel to reel. When Clydesight learned of BadEditPro's dilemma with his vintage cassette tape recorder, he offered, out of friendship, to take a look and attempt to restore the machine because of its historical value and interest. The results were highly successful.

The Realistic Sound Video Series:

Clydesight made a video log of all the work he did while restoring the Realistic CTR-68 cassette tape recorder for BadEditPro. This log spans hours of time, and BadEditPro was so captivated by the work shown on the video that he suggested they collaborate on making an edited video series for YouTube tape recorder fans to educate and inspire them in their tape recorder hobby. The two "channels" successfully collaborated on the development of this Realistic Sound series and it was produced by ClydeSight Productions in exchange for advertisements of the Subliminal Message DSPP products.

There are FIVE episodes in the Realistic Sound series:

Episode 1 - The Walking Wounded
Episode 2 - What Lies Beneath
Episode 3 - The Problem Is Obvious
Episode 4 - The Weakest Link
Episode 5 - Spit and Polish

The Realistic Sound series are maintained on both channels (BadEditPro and Clydesight) in a Play List Titled: The Realistic Sound Series. The play list can be set to run the series automatically. Additionally, each episode contains annotated links to the first episode and to the next episode as a convenience to the YouTube viewer.

About Episode 5 - Spit and Polish:

Episode 5 - Spit and Polish, of Realistic Sound, chronicles the final stage of the Realistic CTR-68 vintage cassette tape recorder.

In this video, Clydesight provides tips and information on methods for cleaning up and polishing the case of old tape recorders, as well as a caution about some of the plastics used in the old cases. At the end of the video an annotation link provides access to BadEditPro's video on his reaction upon receiving the completely restored vintage cassette tape recorder.
