Does Virgin Galactic Have a Future?

And will it be able to compete with SpaceX and Blue Origin in Space?
Over the last several decades,
scientists and engineers have helped change our world,
in ways imagined only by a few.
If we consider humanity’s rise to space
as starting with Gagarin in 1961,
Then we are 60 years into this endeavor.
How have we progressed?

In sixty years less than 600 people have reached Earth orbit,
And only 24 human beings have left the orbit of the Earth,
With 12 having walked on the Moon…
Next year
2022
On December 14th
Will mark one half century
since any human walked on the Moon.
On that date in 1972
Captain Eugene Cernan
drove a lunar rover out
and set up a camera,
To record the liftoff of Apollo 17
From the surface of the Moon…
These are his actual words…
Restored with noise reduction…
As recorded on Earth…

“Bob, this is Gene and I’m on the surface,
as I take man's last step from the surface,
back home for some time to come –
but we believe not too long into the future –
I'd like to just (say) what I believe history will record:
that America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow.
And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus–Littrow,
we leave as we came and,
God willing, as we shall return,
with peace and hope for all mankind.
Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17.”

Captain Cernan had no idea,
When he left the Moon,
that almost all of the space projects,
developed before his landing,
and all of these that were planned after,
would go unfunded.
That for fifty years after Apollo 17 departed the Moon,
There would be no human presence outside low Earth orbit.
But in hindsight,
After a half century of disappointment,
It should be clear to space enthusiasts that,
If humanity is to have a chance in live permanently off Earth,
It will have to come in coordination,
With visionaries,
and commercial enterprise.

It can cost billions of dollars
to develop a new space launch system.
Making access to space,
For right now,
The sport of billionaires.
Since the dawn of the space age,
spaceflight has been for the extraordinarily gifted and lucky.
This may soon change.
Several companies stand out for trying to commercialize space,
and make it available to at least the well-off citizens
of a developed nation.
These companies are,
SpaceX, led by Elon Musk,
who dreams of colonizing Mars,
Blue Origin, led by Jeff Bezos,
who wants to colonize the Moon,
and build orbital habitats.
And Virgin Galactic, led by Richard Branson,
who wants to use a rocket plane to give
people a chance to experience space.
We haven’t talked as much about Virgin Galactic
In our lessons.
That’s because we are most often talking about,
Orbital space operations and space colonization,
As these are critical
to humanity having more
than one home in the solar system.
But we can’t neglect the psychological aspect of space travel.
Almost everyone who has traveled to space
Remarks upon how it changed their perspective.
The ability to see the Earth as it truly is,
Undivided by artificial boundaries or politics.
They often seem to become less provincial,
Less nationalistic,
And more reflective,
With increased awareness of environmental concerns.
Most humans would love to have access to this experience.
But even if you are highly trained and healthy.
There are so many,
Vying for so few opportunities,
That your chances of winning the lottery are higher.
As I write this,.
There are Oleg Novitskiy of Russia,
Mark Vande Hei of the United States,
Pyotr Dubrov of Russia,
Thomas Pesquet of France,
Megan McArthur of the United States,
Shane Kimbrough of the United States,
And Akihiko Hoshide of Japan.
Seven human beings out of over seven billion,
From four countries out of 195.
If any of us our going to have a chance at going to space.
We have to democratize space travel.
SpaceX will offer trips to the ISS and later around the Moon.
But this will cost the traveler over $50 million dollars.
Blue Origin is planning to send people up
on their New Shepard rocket system.
The New Shepard is a small suborbital single stage rocket.
The rocket has flown 15 times with 14 successful flights.
It has never flown with a human being,
but this is planned as early as 20 July 2021.
The seat is being auctioned off,
and the current high bidder is at $2,800,000,
if you’re interested....
