When Consistency is a Bad Thing for Warehouse Racking | Apex Companies Safety Spotlight

Regularly scheduled pallet rack audits are an important step in safeguarding your rack from damage that could take it out of operation and slow production or, worse yet, injure workers. A thorough pallet rack inspection using the Apex Rack Repair App will record rack damage, whether it requires repair or just careful monitoring. Keeping thorough damage records will help spot any trouble areas by making it easier to identify rack locations that are repeatedly struck. Rack damage occurring consistently signals that something isn’t working well, and in most cases, that means a loss of valuable productivity.

Successful warehousing and distribution operations are built on performing tasks by rote… receive, store, pick, pack, ship…. and repeat. Pallet rack systems are a great support system (literally and figuratively) for those types of productive and efficient storage, picking and processing operations. Doesn’t it make sense then, that rack systems should remain in good, working order?

Regularly scheduled pallet rack audits are an important step in safeguarding your rack from damage that could take it out of operation and slow production or worse yet, injure workers.

A thorough pallet rack audit will record rack damage whether it requires repair or just careful monitoring. Keeping thorough damage records will help spot any trouble areas by making it easier to identify rack locations that are repeatedly struck. Rack damage occurring consistently signals that something isn’t working well and in most cases that means a loss of valuable productivity.

One Lump or Two?
When auditing a pallet rack system, you are not just looking for damage to repair, you are taking an overall assessment of the health of the rack system. A thorough pallet rack audit will inspect uprights, beams, anchors, and safety guard equipment surrounding the rack system. Make sure to look for missing beam clips or anchor bolts, crowded flue areas, and aisles. Some may not seem as obvious or necessary to record, however, we recommend that you do.

If you see an area that receives repeated equipment strikes, then, simply put, something needs to change. A single equipment strike can compromise the integrity of a racking system, but repeated strikes are a concern for labor and equipment safety and, ultimately, productivity.

For example, insignificant damage to a column or strut may not appear to need an immediate repair, but it should be “watched” for additional impacts with equipment. Repeat strikes can be a sign that the aisles are too narrow for the equipment, drivers need better training, inventory changes have led to overcrowding, or the product isn’t fitted properly for the rack system. There are a lot of possibilities to explore when you find repeat rack damage, and the cause should be addressed to ensure the system operates safely and efficiently as intended.

In addition to single areas that receive multiple strikes, be aware of sections of rack that show damage in a row. Again, each damaged spot may not be severe enough to require repair, but collectively, there may be enough damage to comprise the system. It’s best to record each location for repair to ensure the structural integrity of the system as a whole.

The Right Tool for the Job
Warehouse safety is important, so the Apex team is here to help. The Rack Repair Mobile App is a free downloadable tool that will guide you through a pallet rack audit. The app provides a complete record of the inspection to use to order repair kits and for monitoring areas of minor rack damage.

If you’d rather call in the professionals to conduct the audit, the Apex PROs are certified rack inspectors who can perform the audit and prepare the repair specs on your behalf.

Apex Rack Repair Mobile App provides Do It Yourself capability to conduct a complete pallet rack system safety audit. The app prompts you for key specs and photos as you identify system damage on columns, struts, baseplates, anchors, and beams. You can also take notes about wire decking, supports, load deflection, proper flue space, and more.

Our Promise – Whether DIY with the app or a PRO inspection, you’ll receive a comprehensive rack inspection report with an independent solution recommending steps for system repairs and maintenance.
