La Plaza Vieja de La Habana (Old Plaza of Havana)

The Plaza Vieja (1550's) is a plaza located in Old Havana, Cuba. The plaza and its surroundings are also one of the seven (neighborhoods) of the municipality of Old Havana. It has a residential population of more than 17,400.

From the sixteenth century the City Council decreed the establishment of this square, but it was not until the late seventeenth century that the then identified as Plaza Nueva flourished almost spontaneously.

It emerged as an open space in 1559, after the Plaza de Armas and San Francisco, respectively, although there are some authors who point out that it was the second plaza in Havana. It was a residential area of the Creole plutocracy during colonial times.

La Plaza Vieja (1550’s) es una plaza ubicada en la Habana Vieja, Cuba. La plaza y sus alrededores son también uno de los siete (barrios) del municipio de la Habana Vieja. Tiene una población residencial de más de 17,400.

Desde el siglo XVI el Ayuntamiento decretó el establecimiento de esta plaza, pero no fue hasta finales del siglo XVII que la entonces identificada como Plaza Nueva floreció casi de manera espontánea.

Surgió como espacio abierto en 1559, luego de la Plaza de Armas y la de San Francisco, respectivamente, aunque hay algunos autores que señalan que fue la segunda plaza existente en La Habana. Fue zona residencial de la plutocracia criolla en tiempos de la colonia.
