Last night in Ringvassøya, Norway, we got treated to a rare sighting. NASA’s and United Launch Alliance’s (ULA) rocket called ATLAS-V launched from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA at 20:12 UTC+2.
Although we didn’t see the first stages of the launch, we got to see the rocket cruise silently through the Norwegian skies not once but twice! At 21:38 local time, I look up at the sky and see a very strange faint glow developing into a butterfly shape. At first, I thought it was a drone. A few seconds afterwards and as it developed, I knew it was the gases from a rocket launch. Little did I know it was from a rocket that had been launched an hour and 30 minutes before and from the other side of the planet! At first, I believed it was a rocket from the Andy Space center, but after researching a bit on the spot, I found out it was ATLAS-V launching for their mission LandSat9. I was actually out shooting a time-lapse, waiting for the aurora to pick up. I quickly interrupted the time-lapse to record a few frames of the first pass, which ultimately corresponded to stages 7-8 (separation and Centaur Second main engine start). I did not believe my eyes!I kept my cameras running just in case we would have more, as Andy usually sends several in a row. A little after 11pm, as the aurora was brightening up a bit, I see a faint triangular shaped glowing cloud drifting from southwest towards the northwest. This time, I had time to record more frames and also start the real-time filming. It corresponded to the Centaur spacecraft performing its de orbit burn, producing exhaust turned into ice in the upper atmosphere after stage 15, and drifting at the favor of the ionospheric winds. I hope you enjoy this absolutely surreal experience, especially because the rocket went right through the aurora, at least from our perspective! You may also see a meteor in real-time at the same time!
