How To Make Soap Using Olive Oil, Coconut Oil and Lye
In this video I demonstrate how to make soap using olive oil, coconut oil, lye and water.
Ingredients:
6.9 oz lye
16 oz water
40 oz olive oil
10 oz coconut oil
*** Use gloves, googles and mask when mixing lye and water.
*** ALWAYS pour lye crystals into water, never water into lye.
*** Always mix lye and water in a well vented area. I mix outside.
Directions:
Gently pour lye into water (will cause temp to rise) and stir to dissolve.
Heat oils together (I use microwave) to 130 degrees.
Allow temp of lye/water mix to reduce (approx 20 to 30 minutes).
Both lye and oils should be approx 110 to 125 degrees to mix together. I strive for 110 degrees to mix.
Temps of both (lye and oils) shouldn't be more than 10 degrees difference.
If oil reduces too much heat again in microwave for just a few seconds until desired temp is reached.
Gently pour lye/water mix in oils and blend with an immersion blender until you see a trace (swirl or streak pattern) following the movement of the blender.
Once trace is achieved add scents and blend.
Pour mixture into lined molds and cover with towel until room temp and set (approx 24 hours).
Once the soap has set remove it from the molds and cut to desired thickness. I cut them approx. 1 inch thick.
You can then wrap each bar and allow to cure or you can cure them unwrapped. Some people recommend allowing to cure before wrapping.
I have Always wrapped mine after cutting them and never had a problem.
I allow them to cure for approx 4 to 6 weeks.
