Mendip Way
The Mendip Way is a captivating 50-mile (80 km) long-distance walking route that spans the entire length of the striking Mendip Hills limestone ridge in Somerset. Stretching from Uphill near Weston-super-Mare on the edge of the Bristol Channel all the way to the historic market town of Frome, this trail showcases an incredibly diverse terrain of steep climbs, expansive plateaus, deep gorges, and rich cultural heritage.
West Mendip Way: Uphill to Wells (30 miles/48 km):
The journey begins at the coastal salt marshes of Uphill, where walkers immediately climb toward the western escarpment. This section offers breathtaking, panoramic views across the Somerset Levels and the Bristol Channel toward Wales. Key highlights include:
- Crook Peak. - A distinctive, rugged landmark offering spectacular 360-degree vistas.
- Cheddar Gorge. - The trail drops directly into this world-famous, dramatic limestone ravine before climbing back out onto the rocky plateau.
- Wells Cathedral. - The western section culminates in the smallest city in England, finishing at the magnificent, medieval Wells Cathedral.
East Mendip Way: Wells to Frome (19 miles/30 km):
Leaving the city of Wells, the trail shifts in character as it winds through the quieter, less-traveled eastern Mendips. The landscape transitions from high, open hilltops into deeply secluded, wooded valleys. Key highlights include:
- Shepton Mallet. - A historic market town with a rich industrial past and beautiful stone architecture.
- Valleys and Woodlands. - Quiet trails winding through ancient ash and oak woods, hidden valleys, and active limestone quarries.
- Frome. - The trail reaches its official end at the Cheese and Grain hall in Frome, a town famous for its independent shops and vibrant artisan culture.
