Talk Description: Throughout his life, Dr. Hrabowski has loved the intersection of math and language. The challenge of finding clear, simple language to explain complex math problems to others is part of what drove his decision to focus on teaching math. Hrabowski points out that math and statistics provide the tools for not only for engineers and scientists to do their work, but also for physicians, accountants, social scientists, business owners and even university administrators!
Biography: Dr. Hrabowski has been President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County for 20 years. During his tenure, UMBC has become one of the top schools in the country for graduating STEM majors of all races. Graduating from Hampton Institute with high honors in mathematics at the age of 19, Dr. Hrabowski went on to receive his M.A. in mathematics and his Ph.D. in Statistics and Higher Education Administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign at the age of 24. Throughout his career, Dr. Hrabowski has been honored for his outstanding leadership and service to institutions such as the NSF, NIH and NAS. In 2012, he was named by President Obama to chair the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.
