Unbreakable Valor: The Remarkable Story of Horace Greasley's Daring Escapes from Auschwitz
Horace Greasley was a British prisoner of war (POW) during World War II. He is best known for his daring and audacious escapes from German captivity, as well as his confrontations with high-ranking Nazi officials.
Horace Greasley was born on December 25, 1918, in Ibstock, Leicestershire, England. He was conscripted into the British Army in 1939 and served as a private in the Sherwood Foresters regiment.
During the early stages of the war, Greasley was sent to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force. However, he was captured by German forces in May 1940 during the Battle of France. He was subsequently held as a POW in various camps, including Laufen, Lamsdorf, and most notably, the infamous POW camp known as Auschwitz.
While at Auschwitz, Greasley developed a reputation for his repeated and daring escapes. He would slip out of the camp and make his way back to his hometown in Britain to visit a local German girl with whom he had fallen in love, Rosa Rauchbach. He made a total of ten escapes and managed to return each time.
One of Greasley's most famous encounters was with the high-ranking SS officer Karl-Friedrich Höcker, who was in charge of Auschwitz. Greasley boldly approached Höcker and, according to his account, challenged him face-to-face, even going so far as to slap him. This act of defiance demonstrated Greasley's resilience and defiance against his captors.
After the war ended in 1945, Horace Greasley was liberated and returned to Britain. He continued to work as a coal miner and lived a relatively quiet life. It wasn't until many years later that his incredible story of survival and escape became more widely known.
Horace Greasley passed away on February 4, 2010, at the age of 91. His experiences during World War II and his daring escapes from Auschwitz have made him a symbol of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
