Experiment of the Week - Changing the Density of Foil

This week’s Experiment of the Week — Changing the Density of Foil

Materials

* Jar of Water
* Two Pieces of Aluminum Foil

Instructions

* Fill a jar with water
* Place the first piece of foil flat on the surface of the water so it floats
* While it is still in the water, carefully crumble the foil into a ball and observe what happens
* Take the second piece of foil, crumble it into a tight ball before putting it in the water, and place it into the jar
* Compare how the two pieces behave in the water

How this works
The foil that is crumpled underwater has a higher density and sinks because no air bubbles are trapped inside. The foil crumpled outside the water traps tiny pockets of air, making it less dense and helping it float longer. This demonstrates how density and trapped air affect buoyancy.
