How to 1920s FLAPPER CHARLESTON (Solo Jazz Vocab #1) (Fortnite dance)

Learn the basic "Twisty-footed" Flapper Charleston popular in the 1920s (and in Fortnite). Not just a single dance step, this "flapper twist" can be added to almost any basic walking or tapping movement to give it a Jazz Age look.

Know your history! The Charleston step came from Gullah culture of the Carolinas, a culture founded by enslaved peoples. The step possibly even came from African dance steps before that. In the 1910s&20s, the Gullah who traveled, worked in shipping, or the entertainment industry would do the dance in dance halls in New York, where jazz pianist James P Johnson started composing music specifically for the dance step rhythm. One of these songs was the famous "Charleston" song, which was used in an all-Black Broadway show, "Runnin' Wild," which made the step famous. It's yet another example of African American culture producing something that goes mainstream, and its originators are lost and forgotten. So, as you enjoy this Charleston step, don't forget where it came from!
