We Left Hawaii - Tips for Downsizing, Moving, Minimalism, Traveling Light or Preparing for #Vanlife

After moving across the pacific four times, I have a few tips to help you downsize.

Getting rid of your things is a difficult and sometimes overwhelming process but if you take it one step at a time, it won’t seem so bad.

I like to watch an episode of Hoarders and then an episode of Tiding Up with Marie Kondo to get me motivated...ha ha ha!
Then I start with sorting out my clothes and accessories using the KonMari Method. There are lots of videos on that if you would like more info or you can watch her show on Netflix for inspiration.

Next I take the KonMari method to other areas such as the kitchen and bathroom.
When preparing for a move, keep all your towels and blankets to use as padding in boxes and to wrap furniture and large picture frames that you’ll be bringing with you.
When packing your clothes, I’ve found that space saver vacuum seal bags are a life saver. They’re also perfect for couch cushions and pillows.

After you’ve gone through your things and have decided what you’re going to keep, go through the “Keep” stuff at least one more time. Chances are good that you’ll find more stuff to sell or donate.

A yard sale will help you get your excess things sold the fastest. Have prices in mind for some of your larger items or post them on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Everything else, be prepared to accept just about any offer. People be crazy offering 25 cents for a whole set of plates sometimes! If you don’t want people to low-ball you, try pricing most of your miscellaneous things at $1 each. People love a good dollar deal.

Whatever doesn’t sell, take to a donation location. I like to find a local shelter for battered women and children or a thrift store that supports a local animal shelter. Because kids and puppies make the world a better place.
