When is a man a man? This question continues to stir feelings and cause chaos for many, while debates about gender identities and critical masculinity are boiling over as they seek to redefine “the man” of today. Whereas the man of yesterday had to be strong, virile, healthy, brave, a provider, and as masculine as possible, today he is allowed to be weak, helpless, fearful, sad, tender and flamboyant. What is perceived as a threat for some is a salvation for others. To explore the matter further, host Dominik Djialeu asked three different guests with different perspectives to join his festival roundtable. What aspects are important in the realities of gay life? How does a trans* man experience the societal pressures of masculinity? And what happens when racism affects the development of masculinity?
