When you don't achieve your dreams, remember this... | Mel Robbins

I have an interesting story to share with you.

When I was writing the 5 Second Rule, my dream was to become a #1 New York Times best selling author.

I worked night and day for 6 months to be ready for the book’s debut. On the day it came out, you all flooded Amazon with online orders. It took about an hour for it to be listed as “out of stock.” I couldn’t believe it! I thought I had been so successful at marketing this book that it sold out! I was so excited. I thought all my hard work had finally paid off and that my dreams were coming true.

But then I slowly began to realize, we hadn’t sold the tens of thousands of books in Amazon’s warehouse; Amazon took it off the market because they had never heard of me and needed to figure out if all this traffic was real.

For the first several weeks, the book was “out of stock.” All the marketing that I had worked so hard on was useless. I felt like the world’s biggest failure. I felt like the universe and God were out to get me. And I felt embarrassed and unworthy of my dream of becoming a best selling author. I just wanted to throw my hands up and quit.

There was one mindset trick that saved me during this moment: I kept saying to myself, “There’s no way, when you work this hard, that you won’t be rewarded.” I kept telling myself that there must be something better and I needed to just keep going.

And I was right. A month later, I got an email from @Audible titled “Your Monthly Sales Report is Available” When I clicked on the report, I nearly fell out of my chair. The hardcover was out of stock but the audiobook was available the entire time. You guys were buying that audiobook like it was toilet paper in a pandemic.

I became the #1 Audiobook of the year on Audible. The 5 Second Rule was also the 5th most read book on Amazon that year (thanks largely to the audiobook).

I never achieved my dream of being a NYT Best Selling Author BECAUSE I WASN’T MEANT TO. Something better was meant for me.

The point of this? Your dreams are meant to pull you forward through your fears. But you may not achieve them. I didn’t. Just keep going because something so much better is meant for you when you do.
