‘The things that we do’ is a global design project that explores the connection between behaviours and objects. Historically, the specific nature of everyday routines such as eating, sleeping, socialising and playing has affected the design of the objects that we use. The project begins in East Africa, the cradle of human civilization.

This project is a collaboration between British design studio NEON and Kenyan design company 98 Crafted. Both NEON and 98 Crafted are interested in how design is linked to a local culture, and are worried about homogenisation of cultures all around the world. Through the tradition of storytelling, they will discover and translate local habits into objects co-designed with artisans.

The project was exhibited at Design Week Addis Ababa (11-17 February 2019) and Nairobi Design Week (17-23 March 2019, with the exhibition running until April 20th 2019).

The project is supported by the British Council’s East Africa Arts Programme under the ‘new Arts new Audiences’ grant, an annual open call for 18-35 year old artists, organisations and collectives from Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, South Sudan, Sudan and Tanzania.

The fourth Nairobi Design Week took place on 17th-23rd March 2019, under the theme Culture & Heritage. The Culture & Heritage exhibition launched at Nairobi Design Week 2019, running for one month at Nairobi National Museum. The content of the exhibit is a collective from different designers using their skills to spark a conversation on culture and heritage, and what space it exists in for today and the future.
