PHR@MD 2015 Keynote Speaker: Rita Colwell, "Climate, Infectious Disease & Human Health"

Distinguished University of Maryland Professor Dr. Rita Colwell presented the morning keynote, “Climate, Infectious Disease and Human Health in an Era of Climate Change,” at the third annual Public Health Research@Maryland on April 9, 2015. Her talk details her research linking cholera outbreaks to climate change and weather patterns. She and her team were the first to link global warming with a potential rise in cases of infectious disease. Colwell also describes how she and her team have recently developed a bioinformatic method to enable the prompt and accurate identification of microorganisms as agents of disease, which is important for effective disease control and essential for other applications, including “early warning” systems, tracking disease outbreaks, bioterrorism threat assessments, and environmental monitoring.
