Affordable Care Act Implementation:
Intended and Unintended Consequences for Public Health
Chair: Stephen B. Thomas, PhD, Maryland Center for Health Equity, UMD SPH; with Co-Chairs: Robin Newhouse, PhD, RN, School of Nursing, UMB, and Laura Hungerford, DVM, MPH, PhD, Epidemiology and Public Health, UMB School of Medicine (SOM).
The panel discusses the ways in which ACA implementation will influence and be affected by ongoing initiatives at state and federal levels. This includes discussion of progress in the Health Enterprise Zones of the State and how they can serve as training and research sites for improvement in public health of the populations. The panelists describe how tools, such as Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, can be used to identify populations with specific needs and how such tools require the interdisciplinary efforts of teams to analyze the information available. The panel also discusses the role of comparative effectiveness research in informing decisions in ACA implementation.
