Pixar's 'Luca' 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray | HDR Waveform & Color Gamut Analysis

Today, Pixar's 'Luca' has been released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, and we took a look at the waveform and color gamut of the HDR presentation. The waveform is displayed in bit code values, so it has to be converted to nits, like so:

1023 = 10,000 nits
896 = 3123 nits
768 = 990 nits
640 = 310 nits
512 = 93 nits
384 = 25 nits
256 = 5 nits
128 = 0.6 nits

The film's peak brightness is generally around 300-600 nits, but as can be seen at 00:26:57 of the movie, it can get much brighter. In fact, it takes advantage of the brightest level that can be attained by the ST 2084 EOTF - the full 10,000 nits.

In terms of the color, the movie is mostly inside the Rec 709 color space, but it does go slightly beyond that at times. However, thanks to the increased level of brightness provided by the HDR, the color volume is much higher than what you could achieve in SDR, even though this title does not necessarily make much use of the wider color gamut. The higher color volume means that colors can be more saturated at higher levels of brightness.

Overall, this is a very good transfer and the HDR grade is faithful to the creator's intent.
