DirectStorage Sample Measures Performance Impact Of Rendering & Streaming Assets At The Same Time

This DirectStorage sample was developed by AMD.

"The DirectStorage sample application renders a scene while asynchronously loading assets. A camera moves through a scene into bounding boxes which trigger asynchronous streaming of the assets. The assets appear once they have completed loading."

To run the sample with custom parameters, unzip the sample, go to the bin folder, open a command prompt in this folder, and set your desired parameters. For example, the tests in this video were run with:

DS On, GPU decomp, 256 MB staging buffer

.\DirectStorageSample_DX12.exe '{"directstorage":true,"profile":true,"profileOutputPath":"DS_GPU.csv","stagingbuffersize":268435456,"iotiming":true}'

DS On, CPU decomp, 256 MB staging buffer:

.\DirectStorageSample_DX12.exe '{"directstorage":true,"profile":true,"profileOutputPath":"DS_CPU.csv","stagingbuffersize":268435456,"iotiming":true,"disablegpudecompression":true}'

DS Off, 256 MB staging buffer

The csv file from each run will have several data points, including "mean frame time before loading" and "mean frame time during loading." Based on this, you can get an idea of the performance impact from streaming in assets while rendering.
