Union Beats Undefeated Owasso in OT: 10 - 7
The undefeated Owasso Rams came to Tulsa to open district play at Tuttle Stadium against 2-1 Union.Union opened the game with a nine play 78 yard drive highlighted by a 40 yard pass to Jino Boyd from Grayson Tempest. Tempest would get the touchdown on a four yard run to put Union up 7-0 less than four minutes into the game. That lead would last a long time. Owasso’s Cole Adams returned the Union kickoff 55 yards to the Union 41 yard line. But Union got the ball back when Gabriel Ford recovered a Cole Adams fumble to end the threat.
An eleven play Owasso drive ended with a missed field goal early in the second quarter. Then late in the first half a ten play Owasso drive ended when Union’s Jakyri Jenkins tipped an Austin Havens pass and intercepted it in the end zone. Union led 7-0 at the half in a tight defensive battle.
Owasso opened the second half with a 14 play drive that ate up 7:52 and ended up having to punt. Union took over at their own 20, and drove inside the Owasso 30. Union attempted a 44 yard field goal but it was blocked by Owasso. After three quarters the score remained Union 7, Owasso 0.
Late in the fourth Owasso faced fourth and 16 at the Union 36. Quarterback Mason Willingham found Ronnie Thomas in the endzone for a touchdown. Owasso’s Jake Adams nailed the extra point to tie the game at 7, with 5:20 left in the game. Union then moved the ball down the field to the Owasso 25 yard line. On a fake field goal attempt Union handed the ball to speedy defensive back Jaden Rowe and he was tripped up short of the first down by Cody Chase. With 1:25 to go Owasso had an opportunity for the win in regulation. The Rams got to the Union 27. Owasso’s Jake Adams 44 yard attempt was just wide to the left as time expired.
In overtime, Owasso’s first overtime possession from the 10 yard line ended with a 34 yard field goal attempt that hit the left upright. Union quarterback Grayson Tempest had left the game with an injury after Union’s last possession in regulation. So Union used three running plays by Rovaughn Banks and AJ Smith to move the ball down to the 2 yard line. That set the stage for Union kicker TJ Cowan whose 20 yard attempt was good. Union knocks off number 1 Owasso 10 to 7 in overtime. TJ Cowan was the Chick-fil-A player of the game with his game winning 20 yard field goal. Union improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in district. Owasso drops to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in district play.
