A team of scientists in the US and UK has identified the mechanism used by a widespread strain of bacteria to generate an electric charge, paving the way to develop the world's first "bio-batteries."
Research has revealed proteins located on the surface of the bacteria can generate electricity simply by making contact with certain minerals.
The bacterium, called Shewanella oneidensis, can be found globally in rivers and seas, from the Amazon to the Baltic.
